Description
Paris. 1937. The Face of Grief, Broken into Pieces.
Picasso painted the Weeping Woman in October 1937, just months after completing Guernica. The model was Dora Maar — photographer, painter, and Picasso's companion throughout the war years. She had photographed Guernica in progress, stage by stage. She was also, in Picasso's words, the weeping woman.
The painting is small — barely the size of a magazine — but it is impossible to look away from. A face shattered by grief. Eyes that do not match. A handkerchief bitten between teeth. The colours are savage — acid yellows, electric blues, sharp greens. Grief, in Picasso's hands, was not soft or muted. It was angular, fractured, and completely overwhelming.
He gave the painting to Roland Penrose, a close friend, and it eventually entered the collection of the Tate in London, where it remains one of the most visited works in the gallery.
