Description
Barcelona and Paris. 1901–1904. The Years He Painted in Blue.
Picasso's Blue Period began in 1901, after the suicide of his close friend Carlos Casagemas. He was nineteen years old and living between Barcelona and Paris, often cold, sometimes hungry, grieving in a city that did not yet know his name.
For three years, he painted almost exclusively in shades of blue and blue-green. Beggars, prostitutes, prisoners, the blind, the hungry — the figures who had fallen out of the world's sight. He painted them with immense tenderness. They are some of the most emotionally direct images he ever made, and they came from the most difficult years of his life.
By 1904 the Blue Period was over. He had moved to Paris permanently and met Fernande Olivier. The palette shifted to pink and rose. But the Blue Period paintings remain among the most beloved and sought-after of his entire career.
