Description
Paris. 1907. The Day Art Broke in Two.
Pablo Picasso was twenty-five when he began Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. It took nine months and over a hundred preparatory sketches. When he unveiled it, the reaction was mostly silence. Some thought he had gone mad. Braque said it made him feel as if someone had drunk petrol and spat fire.
Picasso had dismantled perspective. He had taken a face and shown the front and side simultaneously. He had fractured a body into geometric planes and reassembled them in a way that made no spatial sense and complete emotional sense. He called it not the representation of things but the representation of thought.
Within two years, he and Braque had founded Cubism — the most radical reinvention of Western painting since the Renaissance.
