Paris. 1949. The Painting That Became a Symbol.

In January 1949, Pablo Picasso's daughter Paloma was born. Around the same time, the poet Louis Aragon came to his studio looking for an image to use as the poster for the World Peace Congress in Paris. Picasso handed him a lithograph he had made — a simple white pigeon, drawn in a few clean lines.

The image went around the world. It became the dove of peace — one of the most universally recognised symbols of the twentieth century. It was reproduced on posters, stamps, murals, and monuments in every country. Picasso had spent the previous decade painting the horror of war with Guernica and the Weeping Woman. Now he gave the world something to hope for.

He named his daughter Paloma — the Spanish word for dove. The symbol and the child arrived in the same week.

      The Design
