Monet set up his easel in the dark and waited for the sun to rise over the misty water. Three fishing boats sat silhouetted against the pale harbour. A small orange disc of sun broke the horizon.
He painted it in under two hours.
A critic saw it and wrote one dismissive word — impression. Just an impression. Not a real painting. Not finished work.
Monet smiled. And named the entire movement after that insult.
