Description
Arles. 1888. Fifteen Sunflowers. One Obsession.
Van Gogh painted his Sunflowers series in the yellow house in Arles in the summer of 1888. He was preparing for the arrival of Paul Gauguin, his friend and fellow painter. Van Gogh wanted to decorate the guest room. He chose sunflowers.
He painted four large canvases in quick succession — vases of sunflowers from tight green buds to wide open gold to dry brown seeds. He worked fast and in direct sunlight. He called sunflowers his flower. No other painter, he felt, had claimed them yet.
Gauguin arrived in October and stayed nine weeks. The visit ended in crisis. Gauguin left and never returned. The sunflowers remained — still golden, still growing, still one of the most joyful things Van Gogh ever made.
The Design
Van Gogh's Sunflowers in vivid golden detail — fifteen flowers in varying stages of bloom in a terracotta vase against a warm amber background. Every swirl of the thick impasto brushwork comes through in the print. Warm, radiant, unmistakably Van Gogh. The Fit
