Description
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. 1889. The Night He Painted a Dream.
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889 from the window of his room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. He had admitted himself after the breakdown in Arles — the incident with his ear, the weeks of crisis that followed. He was thirty-six. He had been painting for five years.
He painted the night sky from memory. The swirling, churning clouds. The crescent moon that blazes like a sun. The eleven stars that pulse with light. He wrote to his brother Theo that the sight of stars always made him dream, the way black dots on a map made other people dream of cities and far-off countries.
He did not consider it one of his best works. He called it an abstraction. He died the following year without knowing that this painting — this dream of a night sky — would become one of the most loved images in the history of art. It now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and millions of people have stood in front of it, feeling exactly what he felt when he painted it.
