Description
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. 1889. The Night Sky as He Saw It.
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889 from his room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy. He had checked himself in after the breakdown that cost him part of his ear. He was thirty-six years old. He had been painting seriously for only five years.
He painted it from memory — not from life, not from observation. The swirling sky, the crescent moon, the eleven glowing stars, the cypress tree reaching upward like a dark flame. He wrote to his brother Theo that the sight of stars made him dream in the same way that black dots on a map made him dream of towns.
The painting was not celebrated in his lifetime. He considered it a failure. He sold only one painting while he was alive. He died the following year, at thirty-seven. Within a decade, the world had decided he was a genius. The Starry Night now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
