Van Gogh painted his Sunflowers in the yellow house in Arles in the summer of 1888 — vibrant, joyful, golden. He painted The Starry Night the following year from his room at the asylum in Saint-Rémy — turbulent, dreaming, midnight blue. Two paintings. Two states of mind. Two of the most loved artworks in the world.
In the ten months between them, Van Gogh produced over a hundred paintings. He painted every day, well and sometimes not. He believed painting was the only way he could truly communicate what he felt, and he felt everything very intensely.
Together, the Sunflowers and The Starry Night represent the full range of Van Gogh — the warmth and the anguish, the golden morning and the swirling night, the flower that turns to face the sun and the sky that never quite settles.
